Press Release

Press statement by Vadug on the government proposal bill to parliament of Ghana to restrict importation of 22 strategic items which Motor Cars are part:

Our attention has been drawn that minister of Trade and industry Hon. KT Hammond on behalf of government has laid before parliament a draft bill to restrict importation of 22 strategic items including motor cars.
We the above union and our affiliates nationwide vehemently oppose it, we emphatically disagree and we are calling on all well meaning Ghanaians, civil society organisations and both majority and minority members in parliament to disagree and oppose same.

The manner in which the licensing process are going to be carried out solely by the sector minister will become problematic and cumbersome. It is our belief that if it goes through a system of monopoly will be created for few individuals and not the entire generality of Ghanaians.
Currently, the amount of motor cars and vehicles produce by the vehicle assemblers in the country are not enough to meet the demand of Ghanaians, the high cost of such motor cars and vehicles are also a problematic to most Ghanaians.

Through the efforts of secondhand motor cars and vehicle importers and dealers that are feeding the nation.
Any attempt by government to impose such restrictions on motor cars and vehicles importation into the country will create a huge and serious unemployment situation due to the high number of people in the value chain.

We totally disagree and calling for withdrawal, because this is deliberate attempt by President Akufo Addo ‘s government to destroy the livelihoodb of the industry players and its entire value chain.

Thank you.
